We were thrilled to roll up our sleeves and support Next Step Trust in preparing the ground for their Garden of Memories, a serene outdoor space designed for reflection, connection, and remembrance. Even our chairman, Brett, got stuck in with the digging!

As we worked, Next Step generously provided some delicious food, which kept everyone cheerful. It was a truly collaborative effort, and we felt proud to contribute to such a meaningful project.

Supporting a Vision for Healing and Connection

For those unfamiliar, Next Step Trust is a registered charity supporting adults across Calderdale with complex health needs, profound and multiple learning disabilities, and autism. Founded in 2006 by parents seeking better opportunities for their sons and daughters after high school, Next Step now operates three day services in Halifax and a respite provision in Southowram.

The charity has always believed in striving for meaningful goals. One of their earliest aspirations—to build their own hydrotherapy pool—was triumphantly achieved even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With that milestone behind them, Next Step is now turning its focus to another heartfelt dream: the Garden of Memories.

What the Garden of Memories Will Offer

The Garden of Memories is envisioned as a peaceful, sensory-rich outdoor space that nurtures reflection, connection, and emotional well-being. Highlights of the garden include:

• A calming swing to provide therapeutic and joyful experiences.

• Quiet corners for reflection, helping individuals process emotions and find serenity.

• A place to honour loved ones, ensuring memories are cherished and celebrated.

This space will be a sanctuary of healing, comfort, and tranquility—offering meaningful experiences for the Next Steppers who rely on it.

Making the Garden a Reality

To bring the Garden of Memories to life, Next Step Trust is aiming to raise around £25,000, based on pending quotes from contractors. Contributions—both hands-on support, like the work ABSabetterway has done, and financial donations—will make a huge difference in realizing this vision.

We’re proud to have been involved in the early stages of the project and are inspired by the incredible impact it will have on the lives of those Next Step supports.
