Get Ahead of Seasonal Paper Jams

October 15th, 2026

When your printer jams, it’s often due to where and how your paper has been stored, rather than any problems with the printer itself. Paper can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment, which can cause multiple pieces of paper to stick together as well as paper curling and creasing when printed on. These can cause your printer to pull through more than one sheet, paper jams, wear to printer parts, and a lower quality of print.

Here are some simple tips to help prevent these problems:

  • Store paper in a dry and cool temperature-controlled space, not near radiators, direct sunlight, or open windows.
  • Stack paper flat on a stable level surface. Storing paper on an uneven surface can cause it to curl or bend.
  • Let paper acclimatise to new temperatures for at least 24 hours when moved from storage to a warmer room. Paper can often absorb moisture when moved from a cool to warm environment, so it’s best to give it time to settle.
  • Only remove the wrapper when you’re ready to put the paper in the printer. The sealed wrapper provides the paper with protection against changes to the environment. Reseal it if you’re not using the whole pack.
  • Fan your paper slowly before loading into the printer. Doing this loosens any pages that are stuck together and could prevent the printer from pulling through more than one piece of paper and jamming.
  • Only fill the paper tray to the max paper line, don’t overfill. Overfilling the paper tray can cause paper jams. Also, try and keep the paper neat when added to the tray, making sure all paper guides in the tray are pushed up to the sides of the paper.
  • Poor quality paper can come with issues such as imperfectly cut edges and irregular sheet thicknesses, which can lead to feeding problems. Make sure you select the right quality of paper for your printing requirements.
  • Remove paper from your printer when it isn’t going to be used for 5 days or more and store it appropriately.
